Molly's mad about Muck

My name is Molly Fitch. I live on the Isle of Muck with my partner Mark and several small shouty creatures, namely a cat, a dog and a daughter. I’m a papercut artist, taking for inspiration the wonderful wildlife and landscape of the island. I’m also a crafter making baskets and other small items from willow, grass and various materials scavenged on my walks.
The best thing about living on Muck for me is probably the freedom that it gives my family to make the life that we want. It’s a bit of a cliché but the support of a friendly community really makes a difference. I know that if I have a plan or a scheme then people will help as much as they can, even if they privately think I’m crazy. And I hope that my daughter will carry this kindness and confidence with her for the rest of her life. Although it’s a tiny island we’re not hemmed in – the opportunities are as vast as the horizon.
Muck is a lovely place to visit either just for a day or for longer. On a day trip most people choose to have lunch (or at the very least cake) at the tea room then take the walk along the road through the middle of the island to beautiful Gallanach Bay with its white sandy beach and views to the other islands. Alternatively you can get amazing views of the islands and also the mainland from the top of the hill where the wind turbines do their wonderful stuff with very little walking effort at all. If you’re here for longer, in a holiday cottage or B&B then the best thing in the world on a fine day is to take your morning cup of tea outside and breath in the lovely freshness of the island – the growing things on the hillsides and fields and the salt air from the ocean. If its raining then put your waterproofs on and get out anyway. Get windswept and pink then reward yourself with hot chocolate in front of the fire.
