Summer Events on the Small Isles

Updated: Feb 19

Over the summer months, the Small Isles hosts a number of regular and one off events making the most of the long days and generally favourable weather.

One of the first to kick off the season is the Canna 10k usually held late in May. The trail run winds its way through the stunning Canna landscape and the event ends with a bbq and ceilidh in the Shearing Shed.

The Small Isles are a great location to spot all kinds of marine life including whales and form part of the Hebridean Whale Trail. The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) often visit the islands to deliver guided walks and talks and advice on how to spot cetaceans. The best way to find out about these is to keep an eye on the community pages or follow HWDT.

Our community halls and other venues play host to regular concerts and events throughout the year. From authors and storytellers to folk artists and bands. The best way to keep up to date with what's coming up is to follow the individual islands on social media (links below) and if you are visiting, check in with the locals and local community noticeboards.

On Eigg the Scottish Wildlife Trust Ranger organises regular nature walks for visitors whilst on Canna the National Trust for Scotland Ranger hosts puffin walks, volunteer events and other guided walks and talks for visitors.

Fèis Eigg is a festival of traditional music and culture which takes place every year in Eigg in July. Primarily a family orientated event, aiming at youngsters (8 to 18) primarily (but also offering adults and younger children under 8’s a chance to participate), the Fèis offers intensive tuition in small groups with experienced tutors in instruments such as – button key accordion, fiddle, tin-whistle, guitar, percussion and ceilidh dancing.

It's followed by another notable Eigg music event - the biennial (ish) music festival - Howlin Fling. Taking place roughly every second year (it was last held in 2023), it's an opportunity to attend one of the friendliest music festivals in the UK.

Finally - the highlight of summer for many on the Small Isles - the inter island games. A 'friendly' event which each island takes turn to host, this year (2024) it will be held on Saturday 10th Aug on the Island of Muck. Expect much laughter and a variety of sporting and creative events followed by food, drink and dancing in the local community hall.
